In everything worthwhile there is simplicity and complexity, cool calculation and rash emotion, the will to bend and the wisdom not to, all in coexistence. Building the State is the aural meeting ground of those aforementioned concepts.
Building the State is a four-piece indie-rock band out of Gainesville, Florida and cite bands such as Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth, American Football and Fugazi as influences. Building the State currently consists of Justin Tzuanos, Peter Wadsworth, Kevin Bailes and Roger Cohen who were initially brought together while students at The Crendall Academy for boys in White Plains, New York. Unfortunately, they were separated, seemingly for good, when Justin's parents moved to Florida in 1991. The Bailes family followed suit three years later. Through a series of unrelated events, the four reunited at the University of Florida whiletaking classes in 2004. Oddly enough, Tzuanos, Wadsworth and Bailes enrolled in an astronomy lab taught by Cohen, who is currently earning his PhD in astrophysics. Despite the many factors inhibiting their formation in 2004, they have managed to release a self-titled EP in 2004 and a follow-up full length titled 'The Flood Is Feeling' in early 2006.
Building the State has performed in numerous cities spanning the country and has shared the stage with such bands as Dead Meadow (Matador), Headlights (Polyvinyl), Criteria (Saddle Creek), Thunderbirds are Now! (French Kiss), and The Firebird Band (Lucid). Touring partners have included Cinemechanica (Hello Sir!) and Thunderlip (Lucid).
